This is one of those times when we have to be thankful that Chuck does not like to ship "good" horses.  That was the only reason he was held off the truck.

Im VERY thankful Tonka was held off the truck. He is certainly a gem! Hes a little rough around the edges on the ground but under saddle hes still pretty responsive!
He responds well to leg ques and the only two things he needs some reminders on are whoa (he takes a few more steps than I like but he does stop) and backing. Im going to play around and figure out which bit he works the best with.
Id like to take him on the trails but I need somebody to go with!

So many good horses... all with their own story.

Stay tuned... Tonka is getting a pro riding eval Sunday. Hopefully he does really well. He has more training than I expected for sure.

As far as why he ended up on the lot? I have no idea. Hes been getting progressively better with his ground manners, he fits right in the middle of the pecking order, hes friendly, he comes when called, is NOT food aggressive, and will tolerate being confined but he does pace a bit. I think he was left in a stall for too long at some point in his life. He has loaded up in the trailer with no issues, drops his head to be haltered, and stood for the farrier- not once- but twice! I originally only had his feet trimmed but after riding him decided I wanted to put shoes on him so I can trail ride him a bit. My farrier said it had been a while since this horse has had shoes (and even a trim.) I was surprised he wasnt more rusty when I jumped on him. He doesnt tie well but if you correct him he will stand fine, he does untie himself so you have to use a crosstie or trailer tie. Tonka tolerated me pulling his mane and bathing him too! He is herd bound but not to the point where it is going to be an issue.

So my best guess is he was just another victim of an irresponsible, idiotic owner.

The same goes for Chief/Tug. Ive spent the last several months pushing every button I can think of on this horse and he has yet to show me any reason why he would be on a feedlot. Hes green, and didnt know too much when I got him but he has never done anytime wrong. Not a mean bone in his body! He certainly doesnt have the training that Tonka does but he also didnt have any bad habits developed either.

My old farrier Mark (who happens to be a fan of Tug) said we live in a sad world where its okay to throw away a horse like Tug. And I agree.

BUT, we also live in a world where a bunch of gals get together and work their hearts out for these "disposable" horses, and angels like you save these beauties and put them back to work and enjoying life.  All in all, I'd say that's pretty darn good.  Could be better - but we are working on that!

It turns out Tonka has "Tonk" in his reg'd name. How weird is that?

And Tonka did really well at his riding eval! I have somebody coming to meet him Thursday. Im thinking of leasing him to be shown. He is too good to sell....
